Mars Geophysical Lander Mission : a Mission Concept from the 2003 Nasa

چکیده
Introduction: 2013 marks the 25 anniversary of the NASA Planetary Science Summer School (PSSS) [1], which is held every summer at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory to provide postdocs and Ph.D. students with an intensive interdisciplinary experience in planetary robotic mission design under the tutelage of JPL's Advanced Projects Design Team ("Team X") [2]. This abstract summarizes the work of the 2003 PSSS student team 10 years after creating a mission proposal authorization review for the “Mars Geophysical Lander” (MGL). MGL is aimed at studying the martian interior in search of past habitability and future exploration support. Some of the design elements proposed for MGL have now been realized in NASA’s recently selected InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) mission, which is scheduled to go to Mars in 2016 [3].

Reproducing Meteorological Observations at the Mars Phoenix Lander Site Using the Nasa Ames
The mission began in late Spring (L s ~77˚) and ended in midSummer (L s ~148˚), lasting for 151 sols [2]. In situ measurements by the lander characterized the local atmospheric conditions (i.e. temperature, pressure, wind speeds and direction, opacity of dust and water ice, and the detection of surface water ice frost) [3,4]. Phoenix measured a steady decline in near surface atmospheric pressur...
متن کاملA subjective assessment of alternative mission architectures for the human exploration of Mars at NASA using multicriteria decision making
The primary driver for developing missions to send humans to other planets is to generate signi.cant new scienti.c knowledge. NASA plans human planetary explorations with an acceptable level of risk consistent with other manned operations. Space exploration risks cannot be completely eliminated. Therefore, an acceptable level of cost, technical, safety, schedule, and political risks and bene.ts...

While progress in AI, Robotics and Automation has been achieved in the United States along multiple fronts, this report will focus on JPL contributions to NASA space exploration objectives. Complementary contributions from NASA and university partners are also noted. As an overview, this article will only briefly describe these activities, and detailed descriptions can be obtained both from the...

This paper summarizes the power systems analysis results from NASA’s recent Mars DRA 5.0 study which examined three architecture options and resulting mission requirements for a human Mars landing mission in the post-2030 timeframe. DRA 5.0 features a long ~500 day surface stay “split mission” using separate cargo and crewed Mars transfer vehicles. Two cargo flights, utilizing minimum energy tr...
